Friedrich Gerstacker’s West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee: Stories and Sketches from Antebellum Times through Reconstruction-Professor Di Maio will read from and discuss the writings of Friedrich Gerstacker, Germany’s most popular travel writer of the nineteenth century.  Based on Gerstacker’s personal experiences, the narratives set in the two parishes cast light on the Mississippi as a vehicle for transport and commerce and on the diverse peoples inhabiting this rich plantation country.
