Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site
Continues Series of Living History Demonstrations
ST. FRANCISVILLE - Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site continues its series of Living History Demonstrations, with the next in their series of monthly programs presenting the "Lost Arts of the Nineteenth Century."
On Saturday, September 18 visitors are invited to come to Rosedown, to learn about nineteenth-century arts and activities. Presented by Rosedown Interpretive Ranger Sasha Traña, this series of monthly programming is intended to introduce and demonstrate various historic arts, activities and crafts that are little seen today. The "Lost Art" that will be presented this month is Hunting Practices.
Hunting was an important part of life in the past, as the products from hunting provided needed food and clothing for people of past centuries.
During the program, Traña will discuss the history and tools of hunting from the ancient Native American atlatl, to the slingshot, through the firearms of the nineteenth century to the present. Also discussed will be the way hunting has changed and progressed throughout past centuries and the reasons why hunting was animportant part of life to people of the past. Traña will be presenting her demonstration between 11 am and 2 pm on the grounds near the main parking area.
Additional "Lost Arts" programs will be offered on the third Saturday of each month. The program scheduled for October is the Lost Art of Loom Weaving.
Rosedown Plantation SHS is located on LA Highway 10 in St. Francisville, 30 minutes north of Baton Rouge, off US 61. The site is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, except
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Guided tours of the main house are provided on the hour, beginning at 10 am and concluding with the final tour of the day at 4 pm. Special programs and demonstrations offered throughout the year are
included with the price of admission.
